Modifying tests
When you modify the testing environment, it is best practice to only change one element at a time while keeping the other elements the same.
Change burning material
If you burn forest material but need to test the Silvanet System with other materials such as creosote-soaked wood (railroad ties), then change ONLY the burning material without making any other modifications to the test. This way you only modify one element. However, any changes you make require time to let the sensors settle (2-4 hrs).
Modified test setup with new burning material (2m between sensors)
To change the burning material:
-
Clear out the ashes from the previous test and replace with new material.
-
Let the sensors settle for at least 2-4 hours. This allows any smoke within the sensor chamber to clear and allow the gas sensor to reset. See Let sensors settle.
-
Burn a test fire as described in Burn test fire continuously for 30 minutes.
-
Record the results of the test, including wind conditions and other parameters. For details, see Record the results.
Change test location
If you change the test location within the 1 km range of the Border Gateway, you may not need to change the location of the Border Gateway. However, if the sensors are further away to make the Border Gateway out of range, you need to move the Border Gateway and update the GPS coordinates of the Border Gateway in the Site Management app.
Prepare the sensors and Border Gateway for the test as was done for the initial PoC setup, with some exceptions.
(1) The sensors need four days to stabilize (recalibrate) after setup so the fire detection capabilities of the Silvanet System should not be tested during this period.
(2) The longitude and latitude of the new location needs to be changed for each sensor in the Silvanet solution.
When changing test location:
-
Redeploy the Border Gateway (if required).
-
Use the existing Deployment Packet. Another Deployment Packet does not need to be built.
-
Arrange the sensors as suggested in Deploying the sensors.
-
Update the sensor location, as described in Updating sensor location coordinates.
-
Let the sensor stabilize (calibrate) to the new location for 10 days.
-
Burn a test fire, as described in Burning a test fire.
-
Record the results of the test, including wind conditions.
-
Modify the test by changing burning material.
Update sensor location coordinates
When modifying the test, such as sensor spacing or changing test location, the latitude and longitude values for the sensors need to be updated in the Silvanet Network. This is done in the Site Management app.
To update a sensor’s longitude and latitude values:
-
Using a Smartphone’s map app, find your current location.
-
Make a copy of your current latitude and longitude.
-
Open the Site in the Site Management app and select the Sensors tab in the Site Management dashboard.
-
Find the sensor that needs its coordinates updated.
-
Hover over the sensor name to display the options, then select Edit.
Find sensor location
-
In the Edit view, select the Location tab.
-
Enter the new latitude and longitude coordinates, then select Submit.
Update latitude and longitude values for the device
-
The changes will be reflected in the Site dashboard.
