Device Ratios and Ranges

Dryad recommends a ratio of devices based on the effective range of these devices and the topology of the monitored area of a forest.

Overview

The Silvanet Network can support any number of sensors over a very wide area. Dryad's unique Mesh Network which deploys Mesh Gateways to act as range extenders for sensors provides the key to this capability. This allows a vast area of forest to be monitored and protected.

To ensure the target forest area is monitored, Dryad recommends a defined ratio of sensors to Mesh Gateways as well as a ratio of Mesh Gateways to Border Gateways. Furthermore, this ratio is dependent on the range capabilities of each type of device.

Device ratios

When planning pilot deployments or live deployments, we recommend using the ratios described below.

  • A single Border Gateway can support up to 20 Mesh Gateways.

  • A single Mesh Gateway can support up to 100 Sensors.

Sensors to Mesh Gateways

Dryad recommends that for every 100 sensors deployed, use at least one Mesh Gateway, more if necessary, depending on the Site's topology.

Mesh Gateways to Border Gateways

Dryad recommends that for every Border Gateway deployed, up to 20 Mesh Gateways can be deployed, depending on the Site's topology. Additional Border Gateways can be deployed as backup.

Device ranges

When determining the location of devices in a site, ensure sensors and gateways are well within range for sending and receiving messages.

Note

Range values are dependent on the Site topology such as hills, valleys, density of trees and structures in the forest deployment locations.

Sensor range

A sensor can detect VOCs in a range of 80 m to 100 m radius, depending on Site topology and density of the forest.

Sensor to Mesh Gateway range

The range of a sensor to a Mesh Gateway is approximately 1 km, depending on Site topology. In a dense forest, the range may be less while a sensor with direct line of sight to the Mesh Gateway, the range may be longer.

Mesh Gateway to Mesh Gateway range

The range of a Mesh Gateway to another Mesh Gateway is approximately 2-3 km. The actual range may vary depending on the Site topology. With direct line of sight between Mesh Gateways, the range can exceed 3 km.

The range of a Border Gateway to a Mesh Gateway is approximately 2-3 km. The actual range may vary depending on Site topology. With direct line of sight between the Border Gateway and the Mesh Gateway, the range can exceed 3 km.

The Silvanet Mesh Gateway can communicate with other Mesh Gateways or Border Gateways in a range of 2 to 3 kilometers. The actual range may vary depending on environmental conditions. With direct line of sight, the range can exceed 3 km up to even 8 km.

An additional Border Gateway can be added to provide a backup Border Gateway or to provide load balancing.
