Deploy the Devices

Use the Silvanet Deployment app to locate where the Silvanet devices are to be deployed.

Silvanet Network development process

Deploying devices

Deploying Silvanet sensors and gateways is a three-step process:

  • Find the deployment location using the GPS coordinates saved in Silvanet Deployment app.

  • Register the Device ID to link the device with its location in the forest.

  • Deploy the Silvanet devices in the Packet.

Important

Always work in teams of two when entering a forest to deploy the devices.

About Device IDs

Each device has its own Device Id which is printed on a label attached to the back of a Silvanet device.

To add the Device ID in the Silvanet Deployment app, it is provided as a QR Code for scanning the ID automatically and as a text string for entering the ID manually.

Deploy the sensors

Two steps are required to deploy sensors:

  • Register the Device ID of the sensor.

  • Install the sensor on a tree.

Register the Device ID of the sensor

  1. Open the Silvanet Deployment app on your smartphone.

  2. On the Your Packets screen, all pending and deployed Packets are shown.

  4. Select the Map button to display the location of the devices on the Map. Your location appears as a blue dot.

  5. Use the Map to locate the area for deploying the sensor, then select Install

  6. Scan the QR Code of the sensor. You can enter it manually if you cannot scan the Device ID QR Code. The Latitude and Longitude of the location is saved to the Deployment app.

  7. Add notes about the deployment location in the Notes field.

  8. Select the Camera icon to take a photo of the Sensor ID using the camera on the Smartphone to take a picture of the Sensor ID label on the back of the device.

  9. Select Save. The sensor's ID and actual location are saved to the Silvanet Cloud.

Install sensors on trees

  1. Find a healthy tree at the saved GPS coordinates, then identify the install location on the tree (at least 3 meters above the forest floor and facing towards the sun at 12:00 noon).

  2. If required, clear a small area of bark so the sensor so that it hangs vertically.

  3. Attach the sensor to the tree using a tree nail (or crop wire or temporary use only) and spacer.

  4. Repeat the same procedure until all sensors have been deployed.

Deploy the Border Gateway

Two steps are required to deploy sensors:

  • Register the Device ID of the Border Gateway.

  • Install the Border Gateway.

Scan the QR Code of the Border Gateway using the same procedure described for sensors.

Install the Border Gateway

  1. Attach the Border Gateway to a tree using treenails or to a pole using the U-clamps. Crop wire can be used to attach the gateway temporarily. Crop wire is used to attach the solar panel.

  2. Provide the Border Gateway with a power supply. A mains power supply is recommended which in this case uses the PoE Injector to connect to a router if one is made available for use.

  3. Attach the antennas to the Border Gateway. The LoRa antenna is attached to the connector on top of the device, LTE-M antenna on the bottom and the satellite antenna on the side.

Deploy the Mesh Gateway

Two steps are required to deploy Mesh Gateways:

  • Register the Device ID of the Mesh Gateway.

  • Install the Mesh Gateway.

Install the Mesh Gateway

  1. Attach the Mesh Gateway to a tree using treenails or to a pole using crop wire. The Mesh Gateway can be attached using crop wire only for temporary deployments.
